Mentorship Program

Hello NCRA/ANREC Members

We are excited to reintroduce the NCRA/ANREC 2023 Mentorship Program!

The Mentorship Program is critical to the NCRA/ANREC’s learning and development strategy. We aim to offer our members an opportunity for peer-to-peer mentorship and learning that is ENTIRELY FREE.  Our mentorship program is an excellent way for new staff to partner with experienced staff across the sector.

First launched in 2019, the mentorship program was formed to team up new staff with experienced staff mentors who share the same or similar roles at other stations. For example, if you’re a new Station Manager, we would pair you up with an experienced Station Manager as a mentor to support you over 3 months.

The mentorship program aims to foster collaboration, knowledge sharing, and professional development among community radio stations and their staff members, with the support and coordination of the NCRA. It will provide a platform for experienced individuals to mentor and guide those who are new to the field, facilitating networking opportunities and enhancing the overall quality of community radio broadcasting.

We are offering mentorships for Station Staff and Board/Governance, sorry no programmers at this time.

A Note on Equity

Community radio is an essential platform for amplifying the voices of underrepresented communities, including marginalized groups, minorities, and individuals with diverse perspectives. The mentorship program recognizes the importance of fostering inclusivity and providing opportunities for these communities to participate and contribute to community radio actively.

We must foster and support the leadership and experience of Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) within our membership. Following consultation with our Equity Committee and keeping with the recommendations of the ‘They Don’t Come To Us’ Report, we will offer the opportunity for Mentors and mentees to indicate Preferred Matching. This is a part of our ‘Black, Indigenous and People of Colour Preferred’ matching effort. Mentees can indicate that they would prefer to be matched with BIPOC mentors. We will do our best to match those who indicate this preference.

Women's participation in mentorship programs within community radio is crucial for fostering gender equality and empowering women in the broadcasting industry. Through mentorship, women can access guidance, knowledge, and networking opportunities that help them develop their skills and advance their careers in radio. By prioritizing women's involvement in radio mentorship, we can break down barriers, promote gender equity, and amplify women's voices in the broadcasting landscape, creating a more inclusive and diverse radio community.  We are actively looking for women to participate as mentors and mentees.

Calling All Mentors

For us to be able to offer our mentorship program to as many new staff members as possible, we need the help of the experienced staff within our membership. If you’ve been at your station for 2 or more years and have 2.5 hours a month (for 3-months), we encourage you to consider the rewarding experience of Signing Up As A Mentor

Mentors can expect to contribute 2.5 hours a month to support their mentees, whether that be a set time each month or at a time that suits your schedule.

NEW THIS YEAR:  We are actively reaching out to our alumni and others in the broadcasting field to expand our mentors to include those not in our community.

The deadline to sign up is MONDAY AUGUST 14TH.

An Opportunity For Mentorship

As a mentee, you will be paired with mentors with experience in the same or similar role,  so you can ask for advice and discuss complex topics with someone with applicable experience. Past mentees have described the mentorship program as an invaluable experience. This program is free to our members.

We are excited to be able to offer this opportunity and hope that people will sign up here:
The deadline to sign up is MONDAY, August 14TH.

We sincerely hope that stations will sign up for this rewarding and educational program. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
